SAUVIE ISLAND ‘18

There are many pronunciations of this place among Oregonians, but supposedly, it’s “so-vee”. The name is French. Sauvie Island has many attractions; Berry Farms, The Pumpkin Patch and haunted maze, nude beaches etc. I’ve been to all the ones I just mentioned, but I don’t have photos from the latter for… well, obvious reasons.

For now, I’m sharing my experience berry picking and will share photos from the pumpkin patch later this year (CV-19 permitting).

In summer of 2018, Jason and I decided to drive around and try out a few berry farms to compare. Topaz Farm is the most popular one (previously called Kruger Farm), and is where the yearly haunted maze happens. Here, you can find blueberries, blackberries, marionberries, raspberries, and strawberries for u-pick, and much more seasonal produce in their market.

Sauvie Island Blueberry Farm is where we collected several pounds of fresh blueberries. They even have several varieties for you to compare. Note: Blueberries are in season from July through September. I absolutely love berries, but more often than not, they’re stored in plastic containers at the grocery store, but picking local means you can avoid unnecessary single use plastic. And, you support local farmers! That’s what I call a win-win.
